1. the mental process by which a perception or an idea is assimilated into an individual’s existing knowledge (apperceptive mass). See also tendentious apperception.

2. the act or process of becoming conscious of a perception, so that it is recognized and understood. In apperceptive forms of visual agnosia, this ability is lost or impaired. —apperceive vb. —apperceptive adj.
