antitussive

n. a drug that suppresses coughing by affecting the cough-control center in the medulla oblongata of the brain. Among antitussives are the opioids codeine and dextromethorphan; from 1898 until 1924 when it became illegal, heroin was marketed as an antitussive. Also called cough suppressant.
