annual cycle

a pattern of behavior that recurs over the course of a year. Hibernating animals eat more food and gain weight in the months before winter, migratory animals experience periods of activity twice a year coincident with migration, and seasonally breeding animals undergo annual changes in reproductive physiology and related behavior (such as territory defense and song). Some annual cycles occur even in the absence of external seasonal cues.
