anastomosis

n. (pl. anastomoses)

1. the surgical connection of two normally separate structures.

2. an alternate pathway formed by branching of a main circuit, as found in nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. The brain is served by arterial anastomoses that help ensure a continuing blood flow in the event of one pathway being blocked by a blood clot or rupture of a blood vessel.
