analytical psychotherapy

1. a method of psychotherapy using psychoanalytic principles but with less depth of analysis, more active intervention on the part of the therapist, and less frequent sessions than are required for a true psychoanalysis. See psychodynamic psychotherapy.

2. historically, an alternative method to psychoanalysis proposed by Viennese psychoanalyst Wilhelm Stekel (1868–1940).
