amniocentesis

amniocentesis

n. a method of examining fetal chromosomes for any abnormality or for determination of sex. A hollow needle is inserted through the mother’s abdominal wall into the uterus, enabling collection of amniotic fluid, which contains fetal cells. Compare chorionic villus sampling; percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling.
