alteration hypothesis

a theoretical explanation of the misinformation effect stating that misleading information introduced after a witnessed event replaces, transforms, or impairs the original memory of the event, leading to erroneous reporting of that event. Also called substitution hypothesis. Compare coexistence hypothesis.
