in DSM–IV–TR and DSM–5, a group of physical symptoms that arise after cessation of repeated and prolonged heavy alcohol consumption. Withdrawal symptoms include autonomic hyperactivity (sweating, pounding heart, dry mouth, etc.), hand tremor, insomnia, nausea or vomiting, psychomotor agitation, anxiety, and in some cases hallucinations or illusions, seizures, and delirium tremens.
