the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane by a mechanism that requires energy. The movement may depend on a special affinity between ions, a metabolic reaction, or another energy-consuming process. Active transport is involved in the movement of sodium and potassium ions across the membrane of a nerve cell. Compare passive transport.
