U fiber

U fiber

a nerve fiber that loops through the white matter beneath the cerebral cortex to connect one cortical area to another. U fibers provide the fastest route for cortical transmission of impulses; the alternative intracortical pathway is composed of very fine fibers with slow transmission rates.
