subthalamus

n. a part of the diencephalon of the brain, wedged between the thalamus and the hypothalamus. It contains the subthalamic nucleus and functions in the regulation of movements controlled by skeletal muscles, together with the basal ganglia and the substantia nigra. —subthalamic adj.
