substantia gelatinosa

substantia gelatinosa

a gelatinous-appearing mass of extensively interconnected small neurons at the tip of the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Some cells in the substantia gelatinosa contain endorphins and are involved in regulation of pain. Neurons of the substantia gelatinosa extend into the medulla oblongata, where they form the spinal trigeminal nucleus.
