spinal gate

spinal gate

in gate-control theory, a neural pathway in the spinal cord that regulates pain perception by opening and closing, thereby allowing or not allowing pain signals to excite dorsal horn transmission neurons. According to the theory, the gate can be influenced by physical, emotional, and behavioral factors. See also gating mechanism.
