1. n. a vowel or voiced consonant that is capable of forming a syllable or the nucleus of a syllable.

2. n. a nasal or liquid consonant that functions as a vowel in a particular syllable. Also called sonorant. Compare semivowel.

3. adj. related to, having, or producing speech sounds.
