collectively, those parts of the brain (e.g., nucleus accumbens, amygdala) within or connected to the mesolimbic system and mesocortical system that are associated with goal-directed behaviors and are strongly influenced by dopamine. [coined by Estonian-born U.S. physiological psychologist Jaak Panksepp (1943–  )]
