round window

round window

a membrane-covered opening in the cochlea where it borders the middle ear (see scala tympani). Pressure changes in the cochlea produced by vibration of the oval window are ultimately transmitted to the round window. This permits displacement of the basilar membrane and stimulation of the sensory receptors.
