primitive reflex

primitive reflex

in infants, a muscle reaction (e.g., the grasp reflex) that happens automatically in response to a certain type of stimulation but that disappears as the child grows older. The continued presence or reemergence of such a reflex later in life can be a sign of brain damage or damage to the nervous system. Also called infant reflex.
