n. the muscular and membranous tube running from the mouth and nostrils to the entrance to the esophagus (gullet) that acts as the passage for food and respiratory gases. It consists of three major sections: the lower laryngopharynx, the middle oropharynx, and the upper nasopharynx. —pharyngeal adj.
