order of magnitude

order of magnitude

the approximate degree or strength of a number or value within a range, usually to the nearest power of 10. For example, 2,500 (2.5 x 103) and 4,300 (4.3 x 103) are of the same order of magnitude, but both are one order of magnitude greater than 240 (2.4 x 102).
