meningomyelocele

meningomyelocele

n. protrusion of the spinal cord and its covering meninges through a defect in the spinal column. This results in an external sac containing cerebrospinal fluid, poorly formed meninges, and a malformed spinal cord. Also called myelomeningocele. See spina bifida.
