maternal deprivation

lack of adequate nurturing for a young animal or child due to the absence or premature loss of, or neglect by, its mother or primary caregiver, postulated to affect an individual’s early behavioral, physical, social, and emotional development negatively. See also failure to thrive; marasmus.
