imaginal exposure

imaginal exposure

a type of exposure therapy used for treating individuals with anxiety disorders (e.g., phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder). Vivid imagery evoked through speech is used by the therapist to expose the client mentally to an anxiety-evoking stimulus. Compare in vivo exposure.
