gonadotropin

gonadotropin

n. any of several hormones that stimulate functions of the gonads. Gonadotropins include follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, produced by the anterior pituitary gland in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and chorionic gonadotropin, which is produced by the placenta (see human chorionic gonadotropin). Also called gonadotropic hormone. See also human menopausal gonadotropin. —gonadotropic adj.
