gametogenesis

gametogenesis

n. the process resulting in the formation of gametes from germ cells, which normally involves meiosis. In mammals, gametogenesis in the female is known as oogenesis and occurs in the ovaries; in the male, it is called spermatogenesis and occurs in the testes.
