function allocation

the systematic process of applying a knowledge of human factors to determine those system functions that can be performed by human operators and those that require automation, or that require an interaction between the human operator and the equipment. Function allocation is carried out early in the system development cycle. See also adaptive task allocation; clumsy automation.
