family-wise alpha level

family-wise alpha level

a set value of the probability of making a Type I error when carrying out a set of hypothesis tests (e.g., when conducting multiple comparisons within a data set). In many studies, family-wise alpha is kept at .05, such that there is only a 5% total chance of rejecting a null hypothesis when it should be retained over a set of tests.
