drift hypothesis

drift hypothesis

a sociological concept purporting to explain the higher incidence of schizophrenia in urban poverty centers, suggesting that during the preclinical phase people tend to drift into poverty and social isolation. Also called downward drift hypothesis. See also sociogenic.
