double alternation

in experimental research, a pattern in which two consecutive events of one kind alternate with two consecutive events of another kind. For example, in an operant conditioning experiment, two consecutive reinforced (R) trials may alternate with two consecutive nonreinforced (N) trials, yielding the pattern RRNNRRNN… . See also single alternation.
