chloral hydrate

chloral hydrate

a short-acting depressant of the central nervous system, first synthesized in 1832 and once widely used chiefly as a hypnotic. It is occasionally still used to induce sleep, but its use is limited by its potential toxicity. U.S. trade name: Aquachloral. See also knockout drops.
