chaos theory

an area of mathematical theory that deals with nonlinear systems that are profoundly affected by their initial conditions, tiny variations in which can produce complex, unpredictable, and erratic effects. It has been applied by some psychological researchers to the study of human behavior. See butterfly effect; complexity theory; dynamic systems theory; sensitive dependence.
