binaural beat

binaural beat

a periodic fluctuation in apparent position or in loudness when two tones differing slightly in frequency are presented to each ear separately but simultaneously. Binaural beats are not present in the stimulus but result from the binaural interaction between the tones that occurs within the auditory system.
