auxiliary verb

a verb that is used to indicate the tense, mood, or voice of another verb, such as have in The ship had sunk, do in Do you pray?, and be in I was met by a friend. Other common auxiliary verbs in English are can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, and must. Also called auxiliary.
