  2. approach gradient

approach gradient

approach gradient

the variation in the strength of a drive as a function of the organism’s proximity to its goal. For example, a rat’s goal-directed behavior increases in intensity as it nears its goal of food. The approach gradient appears less steep than the avoidance gradient. [originally proposed by Neal E. Miller]
