1. in the earlier writings of Carl Jung, a person’s innermost being, which is in closest contact with the unconscious and is contrasted with the persona, or the externally directed part of a person.

2. in Jung’s later writings, (a) an archetype that represents universal feminine characteristics or (b) the unconscious feminine aspect of the male psyche. Compare animus.
