androgen

n. any of a class of steroid hormones that act as the principal male sex hormones, the major one being testosterone. Androgens are produced mainly by the testes and influence the development of masculine sex characteristics. They are also secreted in small quantities by the cortex of the adrenal gland and can be produced synthetically. —androgenic adj.
