agranular cortex

agranular cortex

the portion of the cerebral cortex that lacks granule cells. It is found in layers I, III, and V of the cortex (see cortical layers) and refers particularly to the primary motor cortex (Brodmann’s area 4), in which layer V (the major projection area) is very thick. Compare granular cortex.
